Petrified Wood is a type of a fossil as it consists of fossil wood where
all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals while retaining the
original structure of the wood. These minerals are most often Silicates
such as Quartz. Other minerals, Manganese, Iron and Copper, in the water
or mud during the petrification process give Petrified Wood a variety of color
ranges: black - Carbon; green/blue - Copper; red/brown/yellow - Iron.
Petrified Wood can preserve the original structure of the wood in all its detail
all the way down to the microscopic level. Structures such as tree rings
and the various tissues are often observed features. Although Petrified
Wood can be found worldwide, it is rather rare in larger quantities and at times
can be difficult to obtain by the average collector.

lava. The siliceous matter is deposited in regular layers resulting in
the banded or striped formation.

Orthoceras
Bookends
|
BK206c Here
is a very nice, above average quality set of Black Orthoceras bookends.
This set measures nearly 8" x 6 1/4" x 2" and has a nice polish on the front,
middle, top and side faces. The bookends have been cut, carved and polished
from Fossil Rock material to expose the very unique fossils and have an unique
dotted pattern on the front face. This material is from Morocco.
The bookends make great decorator pieces as well as super collectibles for the
fossil hunter. Close observation will reveal a small fill area on the
front of the bookends. Although this area maybe noticeable to the naked
eye, we feel that it does not distract from the overall appearance of the bookends,
but due to the minor flaw, we have reduced the price. Orthoceras is
a genus of extinct Nautiloid Cephalopod. These fossils are common and
have a global distribution which occur in any marine rock, especially Limestone.
These are slender, elongated shells with the middle of the body chamber transversely
constricted and a sub-central orthochoanitic siphuncle. The surface is
ornamented by a network of fine lirae or fine lines/ridges.
This set weighs 7 lbs. 8 ozs.

Birds Eye Rhyolite
Bookends
|
BK207b
This is something different from the Rock Shed's gift department. Here
is an above average quality set of Bird's Eye Rhyolite bookends.
The set measures over 12 1/2" x 6 3/4" x 2 3/8". Due to the nature of this material
it does not have a high polish. These bookends are a pretty Pink-Beige color
with an interesting design throughout. This material is from northern
Mexico.
Rhyolite is an igneous, volcanic rock that is composed of Felsic, or Silicate
minerals such as Silica, Aluminum, Sodium and Potassium. The material
is similar to that of Granite, Pumice and Obsidian but due to the cooling process
when formed, Rhyolite did not form any crystals, thus changing the texture of
the material.
This set weighs 8 lbs. 5 oz.
