Jasper is an opaque, impure variety of Quartz that is usually red, yellow or brown in color.  Jasper can appear as an opaque rock with shades of red due to mineral impurities.  Patterns can arise from the formation process and flow patterns in the sediment or volcanic ash that was saturated with silica which formed the banding or swirling designs in the rock.

It is composed of the mineral Talc and is rich in Magnesium and is formed by the metamorphism of ultramafic protoliths and the metasomatism of siliceous Dolostones. It is a very soft material and may have a soapy feel when touched. It can be easily carved into decorative items as well as bowls or other cooking utensils. It is used by welders and fabricators as a marker due to its resistance to heat.

Lapis is a rock and not a mineral because it is made up from various other minerals. To be a mineral it would have one constituent only, and Lapis has several including Lazurite, Sodium, Aluminum, Silicon, Oxygen, Sulfur and Chlorine. Most Lapis contains Calcite, Sodalite and Pyrite. The best color is an intense blue that is lightly dusted with small flecks of Pyrite. Lapis takes an excellent polish and has been made into jewelry, carvings, boxes, mosaics and ornamental objects.

Pyrite, or Iron Pyrite, is an Iron sulfide with isometric Crystals that usually appear as cubes.  It is brittle and can break or powder easily.  Its metallic luster and brass yellow hue have earned it the nickname of "fool's gold" due to many miners mistaken it for the real thing.  Ironically, small quantities of actual gold are sometimes found in Pyrite.  It is the most common of the sulfide minerals and is usually found with other sulfides or oxides in Quartz veins, sedimentary or metamorphic rocks.
