Agates mostly occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or waters containing silica in solution possibly derived from the decomposition of silicates in the lava.  The siliceous matter is deposited in regular layers resulting in the banded or striped formation.

Amethyst is a purple variety of Quartz often used as an ornament. It occurs in color from a light, slightly pinkish violet to a deep grape purple. Upon exposure to heat, Amethyst generally becomes yellow, which some refer to as Citrine or "burnt" Amethyst. It is widely distributed as a mineral, but fine, clear specimens that are suitable for cutting as ornamental stones.

Septarians are commonly composed of a carbonate mineral such as Calcite, a microcrystalline form of Silica as in Flint or Jasper, or an Iron Oxide such as Hematite.  These specimens are also known as a concretion which is a type of sedimentary rock. Septarians were formed millions of years ago by sediment forming around a fossil to create a mud ball transforming the fossil into Calcite and Aragonite.

GAL706C  PETRIFIED WOOD SPHERE

This is an interesting, very cool Petrified Wood sphere.  It measures 5 5/8" in diameter, weighs over 8 pounds and has a nice polish.  The sphere has beautiful rich Dark Red colors with Tan, Purple, Black and Brown accents as well. There are several small natural crystal areas that only add to the exceptional character of this stunning sphere. Very beautiful!

sphere    sphere   sphere   sphere   sphere

Petrified Wood is a type of a fossil as it consists of fossil wood where all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals while retaining the original structure of the wood.  These minerals are most often Silicates such as Quartz.  Other minerals, Manganese, Iron and Copper, in the water or mud during the petrification process gives Petrified Wood a variety of color ranges: black - Carbon; green/blue - Copper; red/brown/yellow - Iron.  Petrified Wood can preserve the original structure of the wood in all its detail all the way down to the microscopic level.  Structures such as tree rings and the various tissues are often observed features.  Although Petrified Wood can be found worldwide, it is rather rare in larger quantities and at times can be difficult to obtain by the average collector.

Quartz is the second most common mineral in the Earth's continental crust.  It is mainly composed of Silica or Silica based minerals.  Although Quartz is known by a variety of names, the most important distinction between types of Quartz is that of macro-crystalline, individual crystals visible to the unaided eye, and micro-crystalline, where aggregates of crystals are only visible under high magnification.  There are many forms of Quartz including Chalcedony, Amethyst, Citrine, and Carnelian which are results of mineral impurities or heat treatments.

Tourmaline is one of the most chemically complicated of all Silicate minerals. It is a complex Silicate of Aluminum and Boron and the composition varies widely with Sodium, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Lithium and many other elements that enter into it's structure. It can occur in a long, slender needle-like crystal to a thick prismatic and columnar crystal to a radial like daisy formation. It comes in many colors usually black and brown (iron rich); brown and yellow (magnesium rich); and blue, red, green, yellow, and pink (lithium rich). This mineral is found in igneous rocks, like Granite Pegmatite, and metamorphic rocks such as Schist and Marble.

GAL709c  MAHOGANY OBSIDIAN

Here is a nice, very large Mahogany Obsidian sphere from Mexico.  It measures approximately 6 1/8" in diameter, weighs over 10  pounds and has a nice polish. The sphere has deep red to almost brown color and is darker than in the picture with a neat black spotted design.  A very cool sphere that does come around that often!

sphere   sphere   sphere   sphere

Obsidian is a type of naturally-occurring glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock.  It is produced when felsic lava erupted from a volcano, cools rapidly through the glass transition temperature and freezes without sufficient time for Crystal growth.  Because of the lack of Crystal structure, Obsidian blade edges can reach almost molecular thinness, leading to its ancient use of projectile points (arrow heads), and its modern use as surgical scalpel blades.

Jasper, or spotted stone, is an opaque, impure variety of Quartz that is usually red, yellow or brown in color.  Picture Jaspers simultaneously exhibit several variants such as banding, flow patterns, dendrites or color variations.  This results in what appears to be scenes or images in a cut section of the Jasper.

GAL711B  ROSE QUARTZ SPHERE

This is an exceptional Rose Quartz sphere from Madagascar.  It measures 4 1/4" in diameter, weighs nearly 4 pounds and has a nice polish. It has a very pretty Purple hue color, great clarity, fantastic inclusions,  "rainbow" reflections and a nice 6 pointed "star". The "star" actually has a 3-D effect as it jumps off the sphere when it's set in the right positions in bright sunlight. The two 3-D "star" photos are an example taken of another sphere. A sphere like this does not come around that often, grab it quick!

Rose Quartz is a member of the Quartz family that exhibits a pale Pink to Rose Red hue. The color is usually due to the trace amounts of Titanium, Iron or Manganese in the mass material. Some Rose Quartz contains microscopic Rutile needles which produce an asterism in transmitted light. An all time favorite at the Rock Shop.
